The Julian Alps are rich in wood, which is why buildings in Gorenjska are mostly made of wood. This does not mean that stone was not used, but there is much less of it compared to the Primorska side. Stone was not used in the construction of hayracks, pasture huts and haylofts in meadows and mountain pastures. Hills and high mountains also separate different Gorenjska valleys. Houses in Bohinj, Kranjska Gora, and Gorje are different from those in Čadrg, Drežnica, or Breginj.
BOHINJ BUILDING TYPE:
Houses in the Bohinj villages are built closely together, and we refer to them as clustered villages. The ground floors are made of stone, while the upper floors are wooden. Characteristic features include beautifully carved galleries- wooden balconies. The overhangs are decorated with ventilation openings. The windows and doors of the houses have stone frames.
The Bohinj building type is also characterized by the so-called Bohinj elongated house, a building design where the residential house and the agricultural outbuilding share the same roof. Access to the barns of the agricultural buildings is via a bridge or in Slovenian "mostovž". The Bohinj architectural style is rich in decorations. On the facades, we often see paintings, and the furniture in Bohinj houses is carved and painted. Bohinj is known for its mountain pastures, ranging from lowland to high mountain pastures. There, we find wooden pasture huts, stables, haylofts (svisli), and cheese dairies.
ZGORNJESAVSKA BUILDING TYPE:
The Zgornjesavska building type is found in the Zgornjesavska Valley and the Radovna Valley. At first glance, the buildings resemble those in Bohinj, but they also have some similarities to the Trenta building type.
A homestead is a collection of buildings that form a cluster. The residential house is made of stone at the bottom and wood at the top. These houses do not have balconies! The roofs are steep, covered with wood, and have so- called eaves on the gable ends- similar to Trenta and Koroška buildings. The window and door frames are made of stone. The facades are decorated with frescoes. The pasture huts in the Zgornjesavska Valley and the Radovna Valley are primarily distinguished from those on the Bohinj side by the extended roof in front of the entrance.
