After the glacier retreated from the Vrata Valley, the Peričnik stream began to fall from a hanging side valley over a conglomerate wall. Peričnik Waterfall is actually two waterfalls, with the larger lower waterfall, which drops 52 meters, being the more famous one. The upper waterfall is only 16 meters high and lies just above the lower one – almost like a mirror image. It is also unique in that we can walk behind it.
The waterfall is spectacular both in summer and winter. Although the visit is more recommended in summer due to slippery ground, in winter, the waterfall offers a breathtaking sight. Icicle candles and frozen sculptures hang from the walls of both waterfalls like stalactites. Due to the falling icicles, extra caution is needed when visiting!
