Great Soča Gorge

Great Soča Gorge

The longest gorges in Slovenia

One of the most beautiful attractions on the Soča River and an important natural value of Triglav National Park is the Great Soča Gorge – remarkable both in summer and in winter, when they are encased in ice.

At the village of Soča, the river Soča has carved a 750-meter-long gorge into the limestone rock, which reaches depths of up to 15 meters. In some places, the gorge is less than two meters wide, while at its widest points, the banks are 7 to 8 meters apart. During dry periods, the pools are filled to a height of about 3 meters, while during floods, they can be completely full or even deluge.

The Great Soča Pools are not entirely accessible, but they can be viewed from several points along a marked forest hiking trail, which runs along the left side from the start of the gorge to its end at the beginning of the Lepena Valley.
