Mountains in winter

Triglav National Park is a mountain park. Because of this, the area is very attractive for hiking, climbing, or mountaineering, both in summer and winter, as well as for other recreational activities.
The chamois uses much more energy to flee in deep snow than on dry ground, and in winter, it is difficult to replenish this energy.

Mountain visits are increasing year by year. In winter, nature in the mountains rests. Life slows down, and the mountains are covered by a thick blanket of snow. However, the beauty of winter in the mountains also attracts many visitors. Since all animals conserve energy during the winter, disturbances caused by humans can be fatal for them.

Except in winter, the most sensitive time for grouse is during the breeding season in early spring. Human disturbances can cause mating to fail, thereby threatening the survival of the population in a particular area.

When visiting the mountains in winter and spring, the following simple rules should be obeyd:

  1. In winter, few animals stay on open slopes above the forest and tree line. Here, you can move freely. However, it is better to avoid rocky and unsnowed areas or crevices, as animals prefer to seek shelter there.
  2. The more you move through forested terrain, the greater the chance of disturbing animals. Therefore, avoid making large detours in the forest and limit your area of movement as much as possible.
  3. In the forest, only use forest paths or marked trails. Avoid the edge of the forest, as this is where animals prefer to stay.
  4. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially in the forest: wild animals flee from unleashed dogs
  5. Ski and walk in silence. If you spot an animal, calmly move away.

If we behave respectfully and follow these simple rules, there is enough space in nature both for us and for the peaceful hibernation and mating of animals.
