The castle was built in the first half of the 12th century and is first mentioned in written sources in 1213. It stands on land that belonged to the Breže-Seliški estate and countess Emma of Krška around the year 1000. In the first half of the 14th century, the castle was bought by Frederick Žovneški. It remained in the property of the counts of Celje until their extinction. The castle's tenants and caretakers changed frequently. After the Second World War, the castle became state property. The medieval mighty castle is now owned by the Municipality of Kozje and has been managed by Kozjanski Park since 1983.
The medieval core of the castle has remained unchanged over the centuries. The mighty tower has been arranged as an exhibition centre, while the Romanesque chapel with its half-domed dome is still partially hidden. The window openings, which are divided into two parts by a mullion (bifora), the carved frames of windows and doors are also characteristic, and modest paintings have been found. The castle kitchen with a large fireplace is a highlight among visitors.
The castle is full of life, especially in the warmer months, when many events are held, featuring local and foreign artists.
