Screes in the Triglav National Park

Screes in the Triglav National Park

Habitats in Triglav National Park

The rocks are continuously eroding, creating scree slopes. Scree is formed by the accumulation of rock rubble that falls from the cliffs due to mechanical weathering of the rocks and unstable soil.
On average, several hundred kilograms or even up to several tonnes of material change position in a single day.

Scree slopes are very demanding from the perspective of plant survival. Plants have adapted in various ways. A long and branched root system allows them to anchor in unstable terrain. In response to burial, plants react by elongating their stem petioles, and they have developed a thicker epidermis to resist damage. Many species also root very easily.

On scree slopes, we find Thlaspi cepeaeifolium with Papaver alpinum. They are accompanied by Linaria alpina and Papaver rhaeticum.

Scree slopes are also frequently grazed by chamois and ibex
