High mountain lakes in Triglav National Park

Habitats in Triglav National Park

High in the mountains, lakes are covered in ice for more than half the year. Most are small, making them very fragile and vulnerable habitats. They are home to different types of algae, microscopic crustaceans and insect larvae.

The heart of the Triglav National Park are the special lakes, formed by glaciers and protected since 1924. The Triglav Lakes are best known as the Seven Lakes. The lakes are located in the Alpine glacial valley between Trenta and Bohinj. The fairytale number seven is not the most accurate, as there are many more lakes, ponds and small lakes. It is true, however, that the others dry up and disappear during the summer.

It may sound strange, but fish are an alien species in high mountain lakes, upsetting the natural balance.

Apart from fish, bathers in the lake are a major problem. On hot summer days, many mountain climbers want to refresh themselves in the cold water. However, we should know that bathing releases nutrients from our bodies in the form of sweat, which is the main culprit in the deterioration of lakes.

All of the high mountain lakes are located in the first protection zone of the Triglav National Park, where swimming is not allowed and is considered an offence due to the negative effects mentioned above.
